朝三暮四 (zhāo sān mù sì): Meaning, Monkey Story and Changing Plans

朝三暮四 can describe changing the labels while the substance stays the same, or, in a later common use, repeatedly changing one’s mind or conduct. The surrounding sentence decides the reading. A clearly explained revision after new information is not automatically fickleness.

Two readings belong to one expression

朝三暮四 is pronounced zhāo sān mù sì, with first, first, fourth and fourth tones. Here 朝 is read zhāo, “morning,” rather than cháo. The spelling is the same in simplified and traditional Chinese. Its literal image contrasts three in the morning with four in the evening.

The consulted Education Ministry entry records an original sense about changing the presentation without changing the substance, followed by a sense about an inconstant mind or repeatedly changing conduct. It also records use for things that change unpredictably. [1] Do not translate every occurrence as either “deception” or “fickle”: first identify what the surrounding sentence is judging.

In a plan-changing sentence, keeps changing their mind may be the useful English choice. In a discussion of a superficially repackaged arrangement, changes the labels, not the substance may explain the allusion. Neither rendering is a universal replacement.

The monkey story changes the order, not the total

The dictionary locates the classical passage in Zhuangzi, Qi Wu Lun. A keeper offers the monkeys three allotments in the morning and four in the evening. They are angry. He offers four in the morning and three in the evening instead, and they are pleased. The passage explicitly treats the underlying amount as unchanged. [1]

In an original arithmetic illustration, 3 + 4 = 7 and 4 + 3 = 7. This shows what remains equal; it is not an animal-feeding experiment. The short classical wording gives numbers rather than establishing that each number means one individual nut. “Allotments” or “portions” avoids adding that unsupported precision.

Outside the story, timing can matter. Receiving something in the morning rather than the evening may change a real person’s options. Use this allusion when the sentence supplies a reason to treat the change as superficial; do not dismiss every schedule change merely because the total stays equal.

Name the repeated change in an original sentence

The following examples are invented for language teaching, not reports about real people or organisations.

刚说好周六见面,他又改成周日,过一会儿再改回周六,安排总是朝三暮四。

“We had just agreed to meet on Saturday; he changed it to Sunday, then soon back to Saturday. The arrangements keep changing.” The repeated switches are visible. The criticism does not depend simply on one revised date.

只是换了名称,收费内容并没有改变,这个调整仍是朝三暮四。

“Only the name has changed; what the charge covers is unchanged. This adjustment still changes the labels rather than the substance.” This is the original-sense reading in a fictional scenario. It is not a claim about an actual company’s pricing.

For an explained revision, ordinary wording is often clearer: “天气预报有变,我们把活动改到室内。” — “The weather forecast has changed, so we are moving the activity indoors.” The sentence states new information and a response. Calling it fickle would add a judgment the stated facts do not require.

Separate superficial changes from sensible revisions

Original context checks for 朝三暮四
Original scenarioReadingWhat to check
A new label describes exactly the same stated arrangement. The unchanged-substance reading can fit.Verify that the relevant substance, including conditions, really stays the same.
A speaker repeatedly reverses an agreed plan without giving a reason. The inconstant-plan reading can fit.Name the repeated reversals rather than inventing a motive.
A venue changes after a documented weather warning. An explained revision. The new condition matters; one change alone does not establish fickleness.
Two rules make incompatible promises for the same event and people.A contradiction question.Compare 自相矛盾 rather than treating all kinds of inconsistency as identical.

The table supplies language decisions under the stated conditions. If you lack the earlier agreement or the reason for a revision, leave that uncertainty visible. “The plan has changed” is a narrower description than a criticism of someone’s reliability.

A contradiction and a change of mind are different checks

自相矛盾 asks whether claims or conduct conflict under the same relevant conditions. 朝三暮四 can instead foreground a succession of changes. “The meeting is now Sunday, replacing Saturday” identifies a revision; it does not necessarily claim both dates at once.

The consulted dictionary distinguishes 朝秦暮楚 as emphasising changes of affiliation or dependence, while 朝三暮四 emphasises changes of mind and conduct. [1] Use that distinction only when the sentence actually involves those features. Do not choose either merely because the literal characters look familiar.

The source-checking guide helps separate the classical scene from a later usage explanation. A modern sentence about changing plans need not contain monkeys, food or a literal morning-and-evening schedule.

Try a revision check

Original exercise: A group initially chooses an outdoor activity. The building then closes for maintenance, so the organiser announces one replacement venue and explains why. Does this establish 朝三暮四?

Read the explanation

No. The scenario gives a changed condition and one explained revision. It does not show repeated inconstant choices or a merely relabelled arrangement. A useful sentence is 场地关闭了,所以我们改了地点 — “The venue closed, so we changed the location.”

For your own translation, underline the unchanged substance or the repeated reversal. If neither appears in the passage, read more context before selecting a stronger idiomatic judgment.
