一心一德 (yī xīn yī dé): United Purpose, Variant and Examples
一心一德 describes being united in purpose. 一德一心 is a recorded alternative. Learn original group examples, distinguish a shared aim from merely being together, and compare shared purpose with focus and 风雨同舟.
United purpose is the central relationship
一心一德 is written the same way in simplified and traditional Chinese. The dictionary reading is yī xīn yī dé. Its recorded meaning is being of one mind or united in purpose. [1]
“United in purpose” is an explanatory translation. It focuses on a shared aim among the people being described. Merely standing in one room does not establish that they are pursuing a common aim.
Keep 一德一心 beside the main form
The consulted entry also records 一德一心 as an alternative. [1] Keep that spelling with the same central meaning rather than treating it as a second teamwork strategy.
The short lexical record does not state that unity requires identical opinions about every practical detail. A common goal can be pursued through different tasks, skills or preferred methods when the context supplies that arrangement.
Two original group scenes state the common aim
These are invented language-learning situations.
为了按时完成展览,大家一心一德,有人整理文字,有人检查布置。
“United in the aim of finishing the exhibition on time, some people organise the text while others check the arrangement.” The common goal is explicit; the roles differ.
两组对装订方式意见不同,但仍一心一德地把校刊做好。
“The two groups differ over the binding method, but remain united in their aim of making a good school magazine.” The sentence supplies both a limited disagreement and a shared aim. It does not imply that any disagreement is always compatible with unity; this particular scene states how the two relate.
A common aim needs more than co-location
| Supplied situation | Supported description | What is not supplied |
|---|---|---|
| Different roles work toward the stated exhibition deadline. | A shared aim with complementary tasks. | Identical skills or preferences. |
| People wait in the same room for unrelated appointments. | They are in the same place. | A common purpose for working together. |
| A group agrees on the goal but discusses the method. | Shared aim; a specified method disagreement. | Complete agreement on every question. |
| Someone says “we should work together.” | A proposed common direction. | That all participants have already agreed. |
For a report, name the aim and the actions directed toward it. For a proposal, keep the proposed status visible. The expression is not evidence of agreement that has not yet occurred.
Compare shared purpose, focused attention and hardship
一心一意 foregrounds concentrated intention or attention. 一心一德 foregrounds unity of purpose. A group may be united in purpose and focused on a particular stage, if the scene supplies both.
风雨同舟 foregrounds facing difficulty together. People can share a goal in an ordinary project without the text supplying hardship. Conversely, sharing an uncomfortable situation does not alone establish agreement on every aim.
Identify the stated common aim
Original exercise: The fictional exhibition team assigns different jobs to meet one deadline. Which description fits 一心一德?
- They are united around completing the exhibition, with different roles.
- They must have identical opinions about every colour and every sentence.
Check unity and different roles
Description 1. The exercise supplies a common aim and complementary work. Description 2 adds complete opinion-uniformity that the scene never states. The phrase does not require inventing that condition.
