一手包办 (yī shǒu bāo bàn): Whole-Task Ownership, Variants and Examples

一手包办 means one person independently handles the whole stated task. Learn 一手包揽 and 一手承运 beside it, use original contrasting examples, and distinguish execution responsibility from gathering ideas or manipulating power.

One person handles the whole stated task

The simplified form is 一手包办; traditional is 一手包辦. The consulted reading is yī shǒu bāo bàn. Its recorded meaning is that one person independently handles the whole matter. The entry also records 一手包攬 and 一手承運; simplified, 一手包揽 and 一手承运. [1]

The lexical meaning identifies who does the handling. Whether that arrangement is welcome, burdensome or excludes other people is a further question for the surrounding scene.

Say what is included in the whole task

“He handles everything” is too broad if the text names only one part of an event. A sentence can say someone 一手包办 the handout preparation without claiming they designed, rehearsed and ran the entire production.

The task can have several steps. One person doing those steps still answers a different question from several people each doing a step. Conversely, gathering suggestions first does not necessarily change who later carries out the execution.

Two original scenes supply different attitudes

The situations below are fictional language-learning examples.

大家商量好内容后,小林一手包办了朗读会手册的排版、校对和打印。

“After everyone agrees on the content, Xiaolin independently handles the reading event’s booklet layout, proofreading and printing.” Consultation precedes the three stated execution steps. The sentence does not give Xiaolin ownership of every other event task.

剧本里,他一手包办布景设计,连约好参加设计的人也不让提出意见。

“In the script, he takes over the set design and does not even let the people who agreed to participate offer their views.” The second clause explicitly supplies exclusion. The criticism comes from that scene, rather than a rule that the idiom always proves exclusion.

Consultation and execution are separate stages

集思广益 foregrounds gathering different ideas. A group can do that before one person executes the agreed task. The expressions describe different parts of the workflow and need not be automatic opposites.

Whole-task handling does not itself prove power manipulation

一手遮天 accuses manipulation of power and deception. The shared 一手 wording does not make it equivalent to 一手包办.

In a clear sentence, name the assigned task, the actual handling and any separate conduct being criticised. Sole execution can be described without inventing concealed information or misuse of authority. If the scene supplies those acts, explain them separately.

Keep booklet preparation within its boundary

Original exercise: The fictional text says Xiaolin independently handled the booklet’s layout, proofreading and printing. Two other people arranged the room. Which account preserves the scope?

  1. “Xiaolin handled the booklet preparation independently; room arrangements were separate.”
  2. “Xiaolin handled every part of the event, including the room.”
Check what the whole task includes

Account 1. It preserves the named work and the separately assigned room task. Account 2 expands the phrase beyond the actual task boundary and contradicts the supplied division.
