围魏救赵 (wéi wèi jiù zhào): Indirect Relief, Source and Usage
围魏救赵 / 圍魏救趙 describes relieving pressure at one place by threatening another place the opposing force must protect. The Shiji account has Tian Ji following Sun Bin’s advice to move toward Daliang, drawing Wei away from Zhao. Keep that causal link visible in modern figurative examples.
Relieve one pressure by creating another
The forms are 围魏救赵 and 圍魏救趙. Read wéi wèi jiù zhào: second, fourth, fourth and fourth tones. Wei and Zhao name two states in the source story. A later figurative use need not concern those states.
The dictionary records a strategy of threatening the opponent’s rear so its forces must return, relieving the original danger. [1] A useful English explanation is “relieve the pressure indirectly by forcing the opposing side to defend elsewhere.” Simply “help a friend” omits the mechanism.
The relationship matters more than the dramatic wording. Who is under pressure, who is applying it, what other place is threatened, and why does that cause the pressure to move? An unrelated distraction does not supply all four parts.
The consulted episode ends at Guiling, not Maling
The official appendix references Shiji, volume 65, Sunzi Wuqi Liezhuan. We read the relevant classical passage in the Wikisource edition as well. [1, 2] Wei attacks Zhao; Zhao requests Qi’s help. Tian Ji is the commander and Sun Bin advises him.
Tian Ji initially intends to lead his forces toward Zhao. Sun Bin argues for a rapid move toward Daliang, where Wei’s position is vulnerable because its strongest forces are away. In the account, Tian Ji follows the advice, Wei leaves Handan, and Qi defeats Wei at Guiling. [2] That sequence is the source scene to explain here.
The chapter later introduces another episode with 後十三歲, “thirteen years later,” involving Han and the battle at Maling. The declining cooking fires and Pang Juan’s death belong to that later narrative, not the earlier relief-of-Zhao paragraph. The consulted earlier passage does not print the four-character label 围魏救赵 verbatim; this guide does not claim it proves the phrase’s first attestation.
Follow the causal chain, not just two place names
| Role | Place or person in the account | What makes it necessary |
|---|---|---|
| Place under original pressure | Zhao; Handan is named when Wei leaves. | This is the danger the relief is meant to ease. |
| Force applying that pressure | Wei. | Its withdrawal must reduce the original pressure. |
| Relieving side and proposed move | Tian Ji follows Sun Bin’s advice toward Daliang. | The move targets a different vulnerable place. |
| Causal response | Wei returns to protect itself. | Without that response, a second action alone is not relief. |
In compact form: pressure at A → threat at B → the opponent redirects effort toward B → pressure at A eases. This is a reading aid for the stated account, not proof that every proposed indirect action will work.
Two original fictional sentences show the response
The following examples concern an invented board game and an invented adventure story. They are not tested game advice or reports of real operations.
在这局棋里,她围魏救赵,威胁对手的另一处要点,迫使对方撤回原本围住主城的棋子。
“In this game she relieves the pressure indirectly, threatening another important point and forcing the opponent to withdraw the pieces surrounding the main city.” The sentence explicitly supplies the other point and the withdrawal.
小说里的援军没有直冲被围的小镇,而是围魏救赵,逼得对手回头守卫自己的营地。
“The relief force in the novel does not rush straight toward the surrounded town; it creates pressure elsewhere so the opponent turns back to defend its camp.” The story supplies an indirect move and a resulting response.
Compare 他直接送来了小镇急需的物资, “he directly brought the supplies the town needed.” That can be valuable assistance without the opponent-withdrawal mechanism. Use the expression to describe the facts a narrative supplies, not to make any helpful action sound more strategic.
Indirect relief is not the same as removing a cause
釜底抽薪 focuses on removing the condition that sustains a problem, using the image of removing fuel under a cauldron. 围魏救赵 focuses on inducing a response elsewhere that relieves the original pressure.
A fictional game move could both remove a supply condition and force a withdrawal, if the rules and events actually establish both. The expressions still emphasise different relations. To choose, ask whether the sentence’s key answer is “what sustaining condition was removed?” or “why did the opposing side redirect its effort?”
If someone merely proposes an indirect move, translate it as a proposal. Do not report the threatened place as captured, the opponent as withdrawn or the original problem as solved without those outcomes in the account.
Which detail makes the relief causal?
Original exercise: A game report says, “A player threatens a second square.” It then calls the move 围魏救赵. What fact is still needed?
Read the missing-link answer
The report must connect that threat with relieving the original pressure, for example by showing that the opponent redirects pieces to defend the second square and releases the first. The second threat alone does not establish its effect. If the report describes only an intention, retain that uncertainty.
Use the source-reading guide to keep an episode’s location, participants and later events distinct.
