一文不值 (yī wén bù zhí): Value, Variants and Chinese Examples

一文不值 describes a strong judgment that something has no value. 不值一钱, 不值一文 and 一钱不值 are recorded alternatives. Learn original Chinese examples, separate value from the owner’s money, and keep a fictional character’s criticism distinct from an independent appraisal.

The target is the thing being judged

一文不值 is written the same way in simplified and traditional Chinese. The dictionary reading is yī wén bù zhí. Its recorded meaning is a no-value judgment. [1]

“Worthless” can explain the figurative sense. In a sentence, identify what is being judged and who makes the judgment. The expression does not establish a price calculation or an independent assessment merely by appearing in the report.

Three recorded alternatives belong beside it

The consulted entry records 不值一錢, 不值一文 and 一錢不值. Their simplified spellings are 不值一钱, 不值一文 and 一钱不值. [1]

These spellings belong with the same central value question in this guide. The separate forms do not supply different levels of measured worth. When reading a sentence, use its target and speaker to identify the value judgment.

Two original sentences identify the judgment and its speaker

The situations are fictional teaching examples.

他把这份新提纲批得一文不值,但另一个角色指出了其中可用的部分。

“He criticises the new outline as worthless, but another character points out parts that can be used.” The sentence reports conflicting evaluations. It does not present the first character’s harsh criticism as an independent finding.

这段虚构对话里,买家认为缺少关键零件的模型一文不值,卖家却强调它还能展示外形。

“In this fictional dialogue, the buyer considers the model without key components worthless, while the seller stresses that it can still show the exterior form.” The speakers judge different purposes. The sentence supplies no actual market price or real product review.

Value, money possessed and priorities differ

Three expressions address different questions
ExpressionWhat is being describedExample of the relevant question
一文不值A no-value judgment about the stated target. What use or worth does the speaker assign to it?
一文不名Someone’s extreme poverty. What money does the person possess?
本末倒置Secondary matters treated as primary.Which priority has displaced the main purpose?

一文不名 does not state that its subject’s work is worthless. 本末倒置 concerns priorities, rather than automatically denying every value of the secondary matter.

An attractive model may serve a display purpose while failing another required task. Name the purpose before treating the reported evaluation as a complete judgment of all possible uses.

A reported criticism is not an invented appraisal

他认为, “he considers,” and 她把它说得, “she describes it as,” can make an evaluation’s source visible in a narrative. Compare “the character calls it worthless” with “an independent evaluation proves it worthless”: the second statement needs evidence the first does not supply.

For a practical explanation, identify the missing component, unmet purpose or disputed criterion. The idiom adds a strong evaluative tone. It should not hide the reason that would let a reader understand the disagreement.

Choose the claim that preserves attribution

Original exercise: In a fictional story, one character calls an outline 一文不值. Nobody has performed an independent assessment. Which report is supported?

  1. “One character harshly judges the outline as worthless.”
  2. “An independent assessment has proved that the outline has no possible value.”
Check the source of the judgment

Report 1. It preserves the stated speaker and evaluation. Report 2 invents both an assessment and a universal conclusion. The original story does not supply either.
